Hoping to follow the same path that led his famous brother to the Kentucky Derby,
Lentenor was among 11 horses entered Wednesday for the Grade I Florida Derby on Saturday.
Lentenor is a full brother to Barbaro, who won the 2006 Florida Derby in his final start
before the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro won the first leg of the Triple Crown before sustaining
what turned out to be a fatal injury in the Preakness Stakes.
Barbaro was the favorite in his Florida Derby, a role that will not go to his little brother.
Lentenor has never raced over a dirt surface or raced in a stakes race.
But the trainer Michael Matz believes the 3-year-old colt has the potential to develop into
a top horse and deserves a shot at proving he belongs in the field for the Kentucky Derby.
In his last start, Lentenor finished second in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park on the grass.
Matz, who also trained Barbaro, has named Alan Garcia to ride on Saturday.
The Florida Derby lost its main attraction this week when it was announced that Eskendereya,
the easy winner of the Fountain of Youth Stakes, would bypass the race and run instead in the
Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. The likely favorite in the Florida Derby will be Rule, who, like
Eskendereya, is trained by Todd Pletcher.
